Performance Specialist/Applied Sports Scientist Intern


About the Internship Positions

The Intern - Performance Specialist/Applied Sports Scientist is a professional strength & conditioning/sports scientist in training. The purpose of this position is to expose new Strength & Conditioning Coaches/Sports Scientists to a frame of work in developing sports performance within a professional sports team setting. The daily routine of this position includes formal education in performance training. Sports science data monitoring, shadowing, and assisting the Performance Manager in all team performance improvement strategies. The internship also involves a hands-on exposure to the implementation of a progressive practical application of performance coaching for elite athletes. Interns hired for this position will learn and work with the Performance Manager and staff for the Portland Thorns FC of the NWSL.

Education Requirements:

BA/BS in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Sports Science, or related field

Preferred: Master’s Degree in related fields, NSCA-CSCS

Preferred: Collegiate Level Soccer playing experience

Job Requirements:

Performance Specialist duties (all in collaboration with Performance Manager):

  • Perform assessments to identify athletes’ movement qualities, analyze info, and prescribe performance training

  • Design comprehensive training programs within the GC Strength Performance

  • Assist in team’s daily activation and preparation strategies prior to

  • Assist or lead strength or recovery sessions with groups or individual athletes in a weight room

  • Assist or lead Soccer Performance development sessions with groups or individual athletes in a field setting. These sessions include:

  • Preparation through application of prehab and movement preparation concepts.

  • Power development through various modalities, including medicine ball, plyometrics, among others.

  • Speed development through coaching of sprinting mechanics.

  • Technical and positional integration by integrating movement skills development in a soccer technical or positional training environment.

  • Assist in preparation of nutrition strategies and implementation

Applied Sports Science duties (all in collaboration with Performance Manager):

  • Learn daily operation of all sports science wearable equipment, and ensure athletes are wearing all devices at each appropriate training event.

  • Familiarize with systems, including but not limited to:

    • STATSports GPS Systems

    • Fit For 90

    • Polar HR monitors

  • Collect and organize training data to monitor athlete well-being and performance output.

  • Daily analysis of athlete training loads, subjective readiness, and RPE feedback.

  • Interpret data collected and prepare relevant reports to affect training decisions for subsequent practices.

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Intern must agree that value of education shared is sufficient compensation for time spent in the program.

Performance Coach - Portland, OR [Contractor]


About the Performance Coach position

We are looking for a Performance coach to engage with, coach, and mentor our youth athlete clients; with the purpose of teaching the performance mindset and driving athletic development through the GC Strength integrated methodology. Your duties will include providing complete performance training; with a heightened focus on movement skill and technique, and sharing concepts and strategies of high performance outside the sports field.

You should be an experienced coach, with strong communication skills, and the ability to relate and connect with people. Organizational skills and a drive for innovation and is welcomed.

Performance Coach responsibilities are:

  • Collaborate with Performance Manager to determine clients' training needs, select the appropriate training protocol, and deliver an educational performance session

  • Collaborate with Performance Manager to prepare new effective training programs and improve those already designed.

  • Set up equipment and space prior to session, keep session properly organized to ensure quality of session flow.

  • Organize individual, partner, and group training sessions etc.

  • In the club setting; communicate with club management and coaches to implement performance system team and club wide.

  • Provide support and guidance to new clients

  • Manage attendance, test & measurement data collection, and sports science key parameters monitoring.

  • Stay informed about new techniques, methods, and systems of performance training.

Performance Coach requirements are:

  • BSc or BA degree in Exercise Science, Sports Science, or related field - additional certification, such as CSCS and other specific training tools preferred.

  • 2+ years' experience in fitness coaching, performance, strength & conditioning, or personal training.

  • Significant experience with training methodologies, exercise tools, performance development frames of work.

  • Excellent communication, presentation and public speaking skills

  • Good practical experience with MS Office, particularly with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word software. 

  • Ability to apply critical thinking and make decisions related to specific customer program adjustments.
